Now that we’re breathing better, let me share a little bit of Soraypampa’s history with you.
Today, it’s famous as a base camp for adventurers heading to Humantay or Machu Picchu, but Soraypampa has deep roots in Andean traditions. Long ago, it was a grazing area for local communities who brought their llamas and alpacas to feed in these lush green valleys surrounded by snowcapped mountains.
Can you imagine it? Surrounded by the towering Salkantay and enjoying incredible views of Humantay, the herders lived in harmony with nature, in an environment that still feels pure and sacred to this day.

Location, location, location!
Soraypampa is located in the Cusco region, within the province of Anta, specifically in the district of Mollepata.
This magical spot sits between two giants: the majestic Salkantay Mountain (towering at 6,271 meters) and the beautiful Humantay. Thanks to its privileged location, Soraypampa is the perfect starting point for the famous Soraypampa to Humantay trekking route or for launching longer expeditions like the Salkantay Trek towards the hidden gem of the Andes: Machu Picchu.

How to Get There
Getting to Soraypampa isn’t too complicated, but it does require a little bit of planning.
Here’s how it went for me:
- From Cusco, I took transportation to the small town of Mollepata, about 100 kilometers away (approximately a 2-hour drive, depending on traffic and, well, how enthusiastic your driver is).
- From Mollepata, I continued toward Marcoccasa or directly to Soraypampa if you have a 4×4 vehicle. This stretch can be a bit bumpy, with tight curves and dirt roads, but every single meter is worth it!
- Many tours offer full service, taking you comfortably all the way to the Soraypampa base camp. If you prefer to go on your own, make sure to bring warm clothing, snacks, and plenty of water.
From Soraypampa, you can embark on the famous Soraypampa to Humantay route, a hike of about 1.5 to 2 hours (depending on your pace) that leads you to the majestic Humantay Lagoon.
And if you’re as adventurous as I am, you can follow the ancient trails and set off on bigger adventures that eventually connect with Machu Picchu. A true gift for the wandering soul!
