Weather: Palccoyo Rainbow Mountain Tour

Prepare for high-altitude adventure at 4,900m (16,076ft). Temperatures range from -5°C to 15°C (23°F to 59°F) with potential snow year-round. Strong winds and intense sun exposure at elevation.

Dry season (May-October) offers optimal viewing conditions. Rainy season (November-April) brings colder temperatures and possible snowfall. Thermal layers and waterproof gear essential.

For a contrasting valley experience, we recommend adding a Maras Moray Private Tour to explore ancient salt mines and Inca agricultural terraces at lower elevation.

Extreme altitude requires proper acclimatization: layered clothing and sun protection crucial.

For the safest and most enjoyable experience, keep in mind:

Altitude Awareness Is Essential

Palccoyo reaches approximately 4,900 meters (16,076 ft). We strongly recommend spending 2–3 days acclimatizing in Cusco or the Sacred Valley before this tour. Oxygen and first-aid equipment are included, and our guides closely monitor each guest throughout the hike.

Dress for Rapid Weather Changes

Mountain weather changes quickly. Temperatures can range from cold mornings to mild midday conditions. Wear:

  • Thermal layers
  • Waterproof jacket
  • Hat and gloves
  • Comfortable hiking shoes
  • Proper clothing makes a big difference at high altitude.
  • Moderate Physical Condition Recommended

The hike lasts around 40 minutes uphill on a gradual trail. While technically easy, the altitude can make it feel more demanding. The tour is best suited for travelers without serious heart or respiratory conditions.

Early Departure for Best Conditions

A 4:30 AM pickup is essential to avoid weather instability and enjoy clearer views at Palccoyo. Early starts also allow a relaxed pace without crowds.

Strong Sun Protection Required

Due to the high elevation, UV radiation is intense even on cloudy days. We recommend SPF 50+ sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat to protect your skin and eyes.
